Two thousand kilometres before the pilgrimage even begins
The Char Dham Yatra takes you to four of the holiest shrines in Hinduism — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — set deep in the Garhwal Himalayas. Delhi is where this pilgrimage has always started. The capital is roughly 250 kilometres from Dehradun and a day's drive from the first valley, which is why almost every Char Dham route in the country funnels through it.
This is a pure land package. There are no flights to book and no airport to reach on your own. Our driver meets you in Delhi — at the airport, at the railway station, or at your hotel — and from that moment until we drop you back twelve days later, every kilometre, every hotel and every meal on the itinerary is our responsibility. If you are already in Delhi, or arriving there from anywhere else in India, this is the simplest way to do the yatra.
Guests who route through Delhi lose the better part of two days to transfers, and reach their first hotel tired before a single temple has been visited.
Delhi sits at 216 metres. Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres, and on this itinerary you sleep there. That altitude difference is the single biggest thing first-time pilgrims underestimate, and it is why this itinerary runs over twelve days rather than being compressed into seven. You gain height gradually through Barkot, Uttarkashi and Guptkashi, which gives your body time to adjust before the two hardest temple days. Slower is safer here — and it also means you actually see the Himalayas instead of only the inside of a car.
The traditional order runs west to east, and that is the clockwise sequence we follow, exactly as prescribed.

Our driver meets you in Delhi — at the airport, the railway station or your hotel — and you set off north through Meerut and Roorkee. It is roughly 250 km and six hours to Dehradun, so we like to leave by noon. You reach the Doon valley in the evening, check in, and eat. Your driver and our office team run through the days ahead with you before you sleep.

Yamunotri Darshan

An early start. Drive to Janki Chatti, where the road ends and the 6 km trek to Yamunotri begins. You can walk it, or take a pony or doli at your own cost. At the top, pilgrims bathe in the hot spring at Surya Kund and cook rice in its waters as prasad before darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Trek back down and return to Barkot.

Drive to Gangotri through the Harsil valley, stopping at the Gangnani hot spring on the way. At Gangotri the Bhagirathi runs clear and freezing beside the temple; pilgrims bathe here, perform puja and collect Gangajal to carry home. Return to Uttarkashi in the evening.

You cross from the Bhagirathi valley into the Mandakini valley, following the river that comes down from Kedarnath itself. Visit the Ardhanarishwar Temple at Guptkashi. Early night — tomorrow is the biggest day.

Start before dawn with a packed breakfast. Your vehicle drops you at Sonprayag; a shared local jeep runs the 5 km to Gaurikund. From there the trek to Kedarnath is roughly 19 km and takes most people eight to ten hours. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available at Gaurikund at your own cost, and helicopter tickets can be arranged separately on request. You arrive in the late afternoon as the day-trippers are heading back down. Tonight you stay at Kedarnath itself — lodging up here is simple by necessity, in huts or tented accommodation with limited heating and hot water, and we book the best available for your dates.

Kedarnath Darshan → Guptkashi

You wake at the temple. Morning darshan and aarti happen before the day's trekkers have finished climbing from Gaurikund, which is the quietest hour Kedarnath offers and the whole reason for the overnight — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, without the queue. After breakfast, trek the 19 km back down to Gaurikund at your own pace, take the jeep to Sonprayag where our driver is waiting, and return to Guptkashi.

Drive to Badrinath, bathe in the Tapt Kund hot spring and take darshan of Badrivishal. Nearby you can visit Mana — the last village before the Tibet border — along with Vyas Gufa, Bhim Pul, Charan Paduka and the source of the Saraswati. On the return, stop at Narsingh Temple in Joshimath and the confluences at Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag and Karnprayag.

Please be ready by noon on day one. The drive to Dehradun takes about six hours and we want you checked in before dark. If you are flying or taking a train into Delhi that same morning, build in a buffer — or spend the previous night in Delhi, which is what we usually suggest. On the last day the return drive from Haridwar is roughly 240 km and takes five to six hours, so do not book an onward flight out of Delhi before about 6 pm.
Already heading to Uttarakhand yourself? Some guests prefer to take the overnight train or the morning Shatabdi to Haridwar or Dehradun and join us there instead. That is fine and it shortens the package by a day at each end. Tell us when you enquire and we will price it that way rather than charging you for road transport you will not use.

Before you fly
Char Dham registration
Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim visiting all four dhams, regardless of age. It is issued as a QR-coded pass, checked at points including Rishikesh, Sonprayag and Joshimath, and you must carry a printout along with your Aadhaar or other government photo ID.
It is free through the Uttarakhand government's official channels — the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal, the mobile app, or the state WhatsApp service. Be wary of any website or agent charging a fee for basic registration.
For guests booking with us, we complete the registration for you. We need clear scans of each traveller's Aadhaar and a photograph, and we handle the rest before you fly.
Season dates change every year — the portals open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April and close around Bhai Dooj in November. Call 7351707071 for this season's confirmed dates.

How to prepare before you travel
Start walking now
Daily walking on an incline for six to eight weeks before departure. If you can comfortably cover 8–10 km in one stretch at home, Kedarnath becomes a long day rather than an ordeal.
Respect the altitude
You start at 216 metres and sleep at 3,583 on night seven, which is a serious gain even for people used to the northern hills. Drink water constantly, avoid alcohol, eat light, and tell your driver at once if you feel headache, nausea or breathlessness. Our twelve-day pacing exists for exactly this reason.
Talk to your doctor
Essential if you have blood pressure, heart, respiratory or diabetic conditions. Carry your medication with a written prescription — pharmacies on the route are basic.
What to pack
Delhi in May is fierce heat; Kedarnath at night is close to freezing, and you will be sleeping up there. Pack for both. You need a fleece and a windproof jacket, plus a poncho, shoes with grip, a walking stick, cap, torch, power bank and cash — ATMs are scarce beyond Uttarkashi. Buy the warm layers in Delhi rather than at the roadside near the temples, where they cost more and are thinner.
Expect patchy network
Signal is unreliable through the valleys and at Kedarnath. Tell your family in Delhi in advance that you may be out of contact for stretches. Our office number stays reachable for them.
Inside the temples
Recording devices are restricted inside the main premises at several dhams. Follow the instructions of temple staff, and keep your baggage light — you carry your own bag on ten different nights.

Questions we get about the Delhi package
Does this package include flights?
No — this is a land package, and it does not need them. Everything from your pickup in Delhi to your drop back in Delhi is included: the private vehicle, the driver, all eleven nights, breakfasts and dinners, and your Char Dham registration. If you are travelling to Delhi from another city, book that leg yourself, or ask us about our packages that start from Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai or Ahmedabad with flights built in.
Can I join at Haridwar or Dehradun instead of Delhi?
Yes, and many guests do. The overnight train and the morning Shatabdi both run from Delhi to Haridwar and Dehradun, and some people prefer them to six hours in a car. If you join us at either place we drop the Delhi road legs from the itinerary and price the package accordingly — you will not be charged for transport you do not use. Tell us at the enquiry stage so we can plan the first and last days around your train.
What time do we leave Delhi, and when do we get back?
We aim to leave Delhi by noon on day one, because the drive to Dehradun takes about six hours and we would rather you arrived before dark. On the last day the drive back from Haridwar is roughly 240 km and takes five to six hours, so plan your onward flight or train out of Delhi for the evening — nothing before about 6 pm. Mountain traffic and weather can add time, and we would rather you had the buffer than a missed connection.
Can we use our own car for the journey?
You can drive your own vehicle to Dehradun or Haridwar and join us from there, but we do not recommend taking a private car deep into the Char Dham circuit unless the driver has real experience of these roads. The stretches beyond Uttarkashi and Guptkashi are narrow, heavily trafficked in season, and unforgiving in rain. Our drivers work this route every week through the season. If you would still prefer your own vehicle, tell us and we will quote a land package without transport.
How many days do I need?
Twelve days including return flights, which is what this package covers. The extra day buys you a night at Kedarnath rather than a same-day return, which is what makes the 19 km trek manageable. Attempting all four dhams in under nine days from South India means arriving exhausted and under-acclimatised. If you have less time, the helicopter yatra covers all four shrines in five to six days, or Do Dham covers Kedarnath and Badrinath in about eight.
What is the best time for Char Dham Yatra?
The season runs from late April to early November. May–June and September–October are the best windows — clear weather, open roads, comfortable temperatures. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain, landslides and road closures across Garhwal, and we generally advise against travelling then. The temples close for winter around Bhai Dooj.
Can I travel during the monsoon months?
We would rather you did not. The monsoon reaches Garhwal from late June, and July and August are when the hill roads are most likely to be blocked by landslides and the Kedarnath trail is at its most slippery. If school holidays force a monsoon departure, tell us early — we will be straight with you about the risk rather than take the booking and hope.
Is the yatra physically difficult?
Demanding but not technical. The driving days are long on winding mountain roads. The two trekking days — 6 km each way to Yamunotri and 19 km each way to Kedarnath — are the hardest parts, and ponies, palkis and helicopter services exist precisely so that people who cannot walk them can still take darshan.
What is it like staying overnight at Kedarnath?
Basic, cold, and worth it. Accommodation at the temple is huts or tented lodging rather than hotels — limited heating, limited hot water, shared facilities in many cases. What you get in return is the morning aarti before the day's climbers arrive, and a 19 km descent taken fresh the next morning instead of on legs that have already walked 19 km up. For most people, especially those over 50, the overnight makes Kedarnath achievable rather than gruelling. Carry a warm layer to sleep in.
Can senior citizens do this trip?
Yes, and a large share of our guests are over 60. For elderly travellers the two long road days at either end are worth planning around — consider spending the night before day one in Delhi rather than arriving and driving on the same day. Seniors typically take a pony or palki at Yamunotri and a helicopter or palki at Kedarnath, and we build in extra rest. We do ask that anyone with a heart, lung, blood pressure or diabetic condition gets a doctor's clearance before booking, and we would rather tell you honestly if a shorter itinerary suits you better.
Is helicopter service available?
Yes. Kedarnath helicopter tickets from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi can be added to this package, and we also run a complete Char Dham helicopter yatra covering all four shrines in five to six days. Seats sell out early and are weather-dependent, so book well ahead.
What do ponies and palkis cost?
Rates are fixed by the local administration, revised every season, and they move with demand and weather. Because of that we do not publish figures that go stale. Call us and we will give you the current season's rates for both Yamunotri and Kedarnath before you commit.
Will you handle my registration?
Yes. Registration is mandatory for all four dhams and is checked at multiple points on the route. It is included in this package — we complete it for every traveller in your group before departure. We need each person's Aadhaar and a photograph.
Is the food vegetarian?
Entirely. Breakfast and dinner are pure vegetarian throughout, and non-vegetarian food and alcohol are neither available nor appropriate on the yatra route.
What does the package cost?
It depends on your travel dates, group size, hotel category and whether you add helicopter services. There is no airfare in this package, so the price moves mainly with your dates, group size and hotel category. What if my flight is cancelled, or a road is blocked?
Both happen on this route, and our answer is honesty rather than promises. Mountain roads close after heavy rain, and the Delhi–Dehradun highway can be slow in bad weather. Our Dehradun office tracks conditions daily, re-sequences the itinerary as needed, and can meet you at Delhi instead if a flight diverts. Costs arising from natural causes are not covered in the package price, but you will never be left to sort it out yourself.
