An early drive north-west to Bikaner. In the afternoon, Junagarh Fort — built in the late 1500s for Raja Rai Singh, and unusual in Rajasthan for standing on the plain rather than a hilltop — with its gilded, painted palace rooms. If time allows, the camel herds at the National Research Centre on Camel just outside town, then the carved red-sandstone Rampuria havelis and Bikaner’s famous bhujia in the old city.

An early visit to the Karni Mata Temple at Deshnoke, with its marble façade and silver doors, famous for the thousands of rats revered here as holy — spotting a white one is said to bring luck. Then the long drive west across the Thar to Jaisalmer, arriving in the evening as the golden fort lights up.

Morning inside Jaisalmer Fort, the golden “Sonar Qila” where people still live within the walls, with its Jain temples and palace. Then the carved sandstone mansions of Patwon ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli, and the shrines around Gadisar Lake. In the afternoon, drive out past the royal cenotaphs of Bada Bagh to the Sam sand dunes for sunset, a camel or jeep ride, and Rajasthani folk music and dinner at a desert camp.

Jaipur to Bikaner is about 335 km, around 6 hours; Bikaner to Jaisalmer about 330 km, around 6 hours plus the short trip to Karni Mata; and Jaisalmer to Jodhpur about 285 km, around 5 hours.
What is Bikaner famous for?
Junagarh Fort, one of the few great Rajasthan forts built on flat ground; the Karni Mata Temple at nearby Deshnoke; its camels and the Bikaner Camel Festival; and Bikaneri bhujia, the crisp spiced snack sold all over India.
Is the Karni Mata Temple included?
Yes. We stop at the temple in Deshnoke, about 30 km from Bikaner, on the morning we leave for Jaisalmer. Thousands of rats live in the temple and are revered as holy; shoes are left outside, so carry socks if you prefer.
Is the camel ride included?
The drive to the Sam dunes and dinner at the desert camp are included. Camel and jeep rides are paid on the spot to the operators, so you can choose how long to ride.
Can we stay overnight in a desert camp?
Yes, on request. We can swap one of the Jaisalmer hotel nights for a tent at a desert camp near the Sam dunes, so you wake up in the desert.
Where does the tour start and end?
It starts with pickup at Jaipur airport or railway station and ends with a drop at Jodhpur airport or railway station, which has better flight and train connections than Bikaner or Jaisalmer.
