The two dhamsYamunotri (3,293 m) is the temple of Goddess Yamuna, reached by a walk of about 6 km from Janki Chatti. Gangotri (3,100 m) is the temple of Goddess Ganga on the Bhagirathi, reached by road. Both are in Uttarkashi district and are the first two of the Char Dham.
DatesBoth temples opened on Akshaya Tritiya, 19 April 2026. Gangotri closes around 10 November 2026 and Yamunotri on Bhai Dooj, around 11 November. Both reopen on Akshaya Tritiya 2027.

The exact 2026 closing times are announced on Vijayadashami. In winter, Goddess Yamuna is worshipped at Kharsali and Goddess Ganga at Mukhba, near Harsil. Planning for May or June 2027? Book early: the weeks after opening are the busiest of the year.

An early drive past Hanuman Chatti to Janki Chatti, then the walk up to Yamunotri on foot, by pony or by palki. Bathe in the hot Surya Kund, where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in muslin cloth as prasad, and offer puja at the Divya Shila before darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Back down, with time for the Shani temple at Kharsali, and return to Barkot.

Gangotri darshan

An early start up the Bhagirathi past the Gangnani hot spring and the apple orchards and deodar forest of Harsil. At Gangotri, a dip at the ghat, darshan of Goddess Ganga, and the Bhagirath Shila, where King Bhagirath is said to have prayed for the Ganga to come to earth. Visit Surya Kund falls and the Pandava Gufa, then back to Uttarkashi.

Down the valley past Tehri Lake to the plains. Drop in Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun — airport, station or hotel — by afternoon, in time for the evening Ganga aarti or a train or flight home.

The only walk
Yamunotri trek from Janki Chatti — distance, pony and palki rates
The path from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri is about 6 km each way, paved and steep in places, with tea stalls along the way. Most pilgrims take 2 to 3 hours up and less coming down. For those who would rather not walk, ponies, pithus and palkis are hired at the official counter at Janki Chatti.

Rates are set by the district administration, with a small counter fee on top, and are paid directly at Janki Chatti — there is no online booking. The planned Kharsali–Yamunotri ropeway is not running yet.

What to see at Gangotri and along the Bhagirathi
Gangotri Temple
The white granite temple of Goddess Ganga on the bank of the Bhagirathi, built by the Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. The car drives right to the temple town.
Bhagirath Shila
The rock beside the temple where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated to bring the Ganga down from heaven.
Gangnani hot spring
A hot spring pool on the way up, where many pilgrims stop for a warm bath before Gangotri.
Harsil valley
Apple orchards, deodar forest and the Bhagirathi running wide and clear. Stay a night here on request.
Mukhba
The village above Harsil where the Ganga idol spends the winter, carried down in a procession when the temple closes.
Gaumukh & Nelong
The Gaumukh glacier, source of the Bhagirathi, is an 18 km trek from Gangotri with a limit of 150 permits a day. Nelong valley also needs a permit. Both are add-ons.

Gangotri and Yamunotri road status in 2026
Gangotri road open
After the August 2025 flash flood at Dharali, the Army built a bridge and the Gangotri yatra resumed in September 2025. The highway is open in 2026; landslide spots such as Nalupani are cleared quickly by machines kept on site.
Silkyara tunnel in 2027
The new Silkyara–Barkot tunnel is expected to open in early 2027. It will bypass Radi Top and shorten the Barkot–Uttarkashi drive for the 2027 yatra.

Registration is free — we do it for you
Every pilgrim must register on the Uttarakhand government portal, registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, or the Tourist Care app. It is free and Aadhaar-linked. Send us each traveller's details and we register your whole group for both dhams.
No phones inside the temples
Under the 2026 yatra rules, phones and photography are not allowed inside the temples. Keep your phone with the driver or in a locker.
No driving at night
Hill roads on the yatra route are closed to vehicles from 10 pm to 4 am. Our day plans reach each stop well before dark.
Documents to carry
Aadhaar card for every traveller and your registration QR pass, printed and on your phone. Pilgrims over 55 should carry a medical fitness certificate.
Mobile network
Jio and BSNL work in Barkot and Uttarkashi. Signal is weak on the Yamunotri walk and patchy at Gangotri, so tell family you may be out of reach for a few hours.
What to pack
Warm jacket, thermals, rain poncho, good walking shoes, a towel for the hot springs, torch, water bottle, dry fruits and basic medicines. Carry cash — ATMs thin out beyond Barkot and Uttarkashi.

Yamunotri Gangotri yatra for senior citizens
This is the gentlest pair of the Char Dham. Gangotri needs no walking at all — the car reaches the temple town. At Yamunotri, seniors usually take a pony or a palki for the 6 km path from Janki Chatti. Two nights in each base mean no early-morning packing. Tell us everyone's age when you enquire and we plan the pace, the rooms and the palki around the eldest traveller. Pilgrims over 55 are screened at health points on the route, so a check-up with your doctor before travel is wise.

What is the Yamunotri Gangotri yatra cost for 2 persons?

How many days are needed for Yamunotri and Gangotri?
5 days and 4 nights from Dehradun, Haridwar or Rishikesh: a day to Barkot, a day for Yamunotri, a half day to Uttarkashi, a day for Gangotri, and a day back.
Which is visited first, Yamunotri or Gangotri?
Traditionally Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, following the Char Dham order from west to east. It also suits the road: Barkot and Yamunotri come first from Dehradun, and Gangotri is reached from Uttarkashi on the way back.
How long is the Yamunotri trek?
About 6 km each way from Janki Chatti, on a paved path that is steep in places. Most pilgrims take 2 to 3 hours up. Ponies, pithus and palkis are available at Janki Chatti.
Is there a trek at Gangotri?
No. Gangotri is reached by road — the car drives to the temple town and the temple is a short walk from the parking. Only the optional Gaumukh glacier trek, 18 km beyond, needs walking.
What is the pony and palki rate at Yamunotri?
In the 2026 season a pony from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri and back costs about ₹3,500, a pithu about ₹1,800–2,700 by weight and a palki about ₹7,000, plus a small counter fee. They are paid directly at the official counter at Janki Chatti.
Is the Gangotri road open after the Dharali flood?
Yes. After the August 2025 flash flood at Dharali, the Army built a bridge and the yatra resumed in September 2025. The Gangotri highway is open in 2026; landslide spots are cleared quickly, and we check the road every morning.
Is the Yamunotri ropeway working?

When will Yamunotri and Gangotri open in 2027?
Both open on Akshaya Tritiya 2027, with the exact time announced beforehand. We are already taking 2027 bookings and confirm your dates once the time is fixed.
Where are Yamunotri and Gangotri worshipped in winter?
Goddess Yamuna's idol spends the winter at Kharsali, near Janki Chatti, and Goddess Ganga's at Mukhba, near Harsil. Both villages can be visited all year.
Is registration required for Yamunotri and Gangotri?
Yes, registration is compulsory and free for every pilgrim. It is done online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or the Tourist Care app, or offline at counters on the route. We register your whole group for both dhams before you leave.
Should I start from Dehradun or Haridwar?
Either works — the price is the same. We pick up and drop in Dehradun, Haridwar or Rishikesh at no extra cost. Dehradun is closest to the route and suits those flying into Jolly Grant Airport; Haridwar and Rishikesh suit those coming by train.
Do you run the Yamunotri Gangotri yatra from Delhi?
Yes, on request. From Delhi we add a day each way — ask us for the Delhi price. Or take a train or flight to Dehradun, Haridwar or Rishikesh and join the 5-day package, with pickup and drop there at no extra cost.

Can we do the Gaumukh trek on this yatra?
Yes, as an add-on of two extra days. Gaumukh is an 18 km trek from Gangotri inside Gangotri National Park, with a limit of 150 permits a day. Tell us early and we arrange the permit and a night at Gangotri or Bhojbasa.
Is there a helicopter for Yamunotri and Gangotri?
Private helicopter tours from Dehradun land near Kharsali and Harsil, but they are costly and still need a palki at Yamunotri and a drive to Gangotri. For most families, our car package with a pony or palki is simpler — ask us if you want the helicopter option.
What is the best time for the Yamunotri Gangotri yatra?
May to June and September to October. September and October have the clearest skies and smaller crowds; July and August bring monsoon rain and landslides.
Can we add Kedarnath and Badrinath?
Yes. Adding them makes the full Char Dham Yatra. Or take our Kedarnath Badrinath yatra on another trip.
What if a road is closed by a landslide?
Our driver waits for the road to reopen or takes an alternative route where one exists, and our Dehradun office rearranges hotels. Extra nights or costs caused by landslides or weather are not included, which is why we avoid July and August where we can.
