Temperatures are IMD long-term averages for Srinagar. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are several degrees colder. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, Sonamarg is reachable in winter too.

Most travellers see Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg on one trip — they are in different directions from Srinagar, so each needs its own day.

Local union taxis
At Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg, the valleys beyond town — Betaab, Aru, the upper points, Zero Point — are served only by local union taxis. Your driver takes you to the stand and waits; the fare is paid locally.
Gulmarg Gondola booking
Tickets are sold in time slots on the official JKCCC portal and sell out in season. Carry the photo ID you booked with. Phase 2 can close in wind or snow.
Mobile SIM
Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir do not work in the valley. Carry a postpaid number.
ID & permits
Carry original photo ID for everyone. Gurez and Tulail need checkpoint registration; Keran and Machil need a Kupwara e-pass; foreign nationals need clearance for Gurez.
Amarnath Yatra
In July and August the yatra brings convoys and crowds around Pahalgam and Sonamarg (Baltal). We plan around the yatra dates.

Houseboat or hotel?
Most travellers spend one night on a houseboat and the rest in hotels. Dal Lake is the classic, with the shikaras and views; Nigeen Lake is quieter and more private.
Kashmiri food
Wazwan feasts with rogan josh and gushtaba, harissa in winter, kahwa with saffron and almonds, noon chai and bakery breads. Vegetarian and Jain meals are easy to arrange.
What to buy
Pampore saffron, pashmina and Kani shawls, papier-mâché, walnut-wood carving, dry fruit and a pheran. Buy from established shops — our drivers know where locals buy.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?
It depends what you want: mid-March to mid-April for the Tulip Garden, April to June for gardens and mild weather, September to November for autumn chinars and clear skies, and December to February for snow. Kashmir is worth visiting in every season.

As of September 2026, Baisaran, Chandanwari (except for Amarnath pilgrims), Daksum, Sinthan Top, Aharbal, Tosamaidan, Bangus and Dachigam were still closed. Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Betaab and Aru valleys are open. Our ground staff confirm the latest before you travel.
How do we reach Kashmir from Delhi?
Fly direct from Delhi to Srinagar (SXR) in about an hour and a half, or take a train to Jammu or Katra and the Vande Bharat to Srinagar (about 4 hours 50 minutes from Jammu). We pick you up at the airport or station.
Is there a train to Srinagar?
Yes. Since May 2026 the Vande Bharat runs from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar via Katra, Reasi and Banihal, crossing the Chenab bridge — the world's highest railway arch bridge — in about 4 hours 50 minutes.
Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg — which is best?
Each is different: Gulmarg for snow and the Gondola, Pahalgam for river valleys and slow days, Sonamarg for glaciers and dramatic peaks. Most trips include all three, one day each, as they lie in different directions from Srinagar.

When does it snow in Kashmir?
Snow is most reliable at Gulmarg from late December to February, with February often best for skiing. Srinagar gets snow on some days in winter. See our Kashmir snow tour.
When is the Tulip Garden open?
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Asia's largest with about 1.8 million tulips, opens for about a month from mid-March to mid-April. In 2026 it ran from 16 March to 16 April.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road to Sonamarg stays open all year. Zojila and Zero Point beyond it still close in winter.
Does a prepaid SIM work in Kashmir?
No. Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu & Kashmir do not work in the valley, so carry a postpaid number. Most hotels and houseboats have wifi.
Why do we need local taxis at Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg?
Local taxi unions run the last stretch to Betaab and Aru valleys, the upper points at Gulmarg and Zero Point beyond Sonamarg, so no outside vehicle may drive there. Your driver takes you to the stand and waits, and the fare is paid locally.
How do we book the Gulmarg Gondola?
Online, in time slots, on the official Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) portal. Book early in season, carry the ID you booked with, and remember Phase 2 can close in wind or snow. We help you pick the right slot.
Houseboat or hotel in Srinagar?
Both — most travellers spend one night on a houseboat for the experience and the rest in hotels. Dal Lake is the classic; Nigeen Lake is quieter.
Do we need a permit for Kashmir?
Indian travellers need no permit for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg — just original photo ID. Gurez needs checkpoint registration, Keran and Machil need a Kupwara e-pass, and foreign nationals need clearance for Gurez.
Is Gurez open to tourists?

What should we wear in Kashmir?
Warm layers in every season. Light woollens from April to October, a heavy jacket, thermals, gloves and waterproof boots from November to March. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are cold even in summer.
Is vegetarian food available in Kashmir?
Yes — hotels, houseboats and restaurants serve vegetarian food, and we arrange Jain meals on request. Do try kahwa, and Wazwan if you eat meat.
Can we combine Kashmir with Vaishno Devi?
Yes. Katra is on the Vande Bharat line to Srinagar, so Vaishno Devi fits easily before or after the valley. Ask us to plan the combined trip.
Can we combine Kashmir with Ladakh?

Is July or August a good time to visit Kashmir?
Yes for green valleys, Gurez and escaping the heat. Expect Amarnath Yatra convoys and crowds around Pahalgam and Sonamarg (in 2026, 3 July to 9 August), which we plan around.
What is Chillai Kalan?
The coldest 40 days of the Kashmiri winter, from 21 December to 31 January, when the heaviest snow falls and nights drop well below freezing.
What should we buy in Kashmir?
Pampore saffron, pashmina and Kani shawls, papier-mâché, walnut-wood carving, dry fruit and a pheran. Buy from established shops; our drivers know where locals shop.
Do you have your own team in Kashmir?
Yes. We have our own ground staff in Kashmir who book your stays and cabs directly, with no third-party agent, and who track which roads and spots are open week by week.

Can we postpone or cancel?
You can postpone free of charge with at least 30 days' notice, subject to availability. The 30% advance is non-refundable; beyond that, cancellation charges are a percentage of the total package cost, deducted from what you have paid.
