The journey

Four shrines, ten days, one operator

The Char Dham Yatra visits the four holiest shrines in the Garhwal Himalayas — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — in the clockwise order tradition prescribes. This package covers all four from Dehradun over nine nights, including an overnight stay at Kedarnath itself rather than a punishing same-day return.

Pack The Bag Tours is based in Dehradun, twenty minutes from Jolly Grant Airport and at the entrance to the entire circuit. We have run this route since 2014 under certification from the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. Our drivers work these roads every week through the season, which is why they know which stretch is blocked before it reaches the news.

Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres and the trek from Gaurikund is around 19 kilometres. Getting there is not the hard part — getting back down the same day is.

That is why we sleep at the temple. You arrive in the late afternoon as the day-trippers head down, take darshan at the morning aarti before the next day's climbers arrive, and descend fresh. For most pilgrims, and particularly those over fifty, this single decision is what turns Kedarnath from an ordeal into a pilgrimage.

Every departure is private. Your family travels in its own vehicle, on its own schedule — no thirty-seat coach and no waiting for strangers at every stop.

What the Char Dham Yatra covers

The Char Dham Yatra is a Hindu pilgrimage to four shrines in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri and Gangotri mark the sources of the Yamuna and the Ganges. Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Badrinath, dedicated to Vishnu, is also one of the four national Char Dham sites identified by Adi Shankara. Pilgrims visit them west to east in a single clockwise circuit.

Kedarnath is the highest point of the pilgrimage and the only shrine on this itinerary where you stay overnight. Gangotri and Badrinath are both reached by road, which is why they are the easier days.

We meet you at your preferred pickup point in Dehradun and set off through Mussoorie into the Yamuna valley. If the schedule allows there is time to stop at Kempty Falls. The road climbs steadily and the Himalayas open up within the first two hours. Check in at Barkot and rest.

Yamunotri Darshan

An early start. Drive to Janki Chatti, where the road ends and the 6 km trek to Yamunotri begins. Walk it, or take a pony or doli at your own cost. At the top, pilgrims bathe in the hot spring at Surya Kund and cook rice in its waters as prasad before darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Trek back down and return to Barkot.

Gangotri Darshan

Start before dawn with a packed breakfast. Your vehicle drops you at Sonprayag; a shared local jeep runs the 5 km to Gaurikund. From there the trek to Kedarnath is roughly 19 km and takes most people eight to ten hours. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available at Gaurikund at your own cost, and helicopter tickets from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi can be arranged on request. You arrive in the late afternoon as the day-trippers head down. Tonight you stay at Kedarnath — lodging up here is simple by necessity, in huts or tented accommodation with limited heating and hot water, and we book the best available for your dates.

You wake at the temple. Morning darshan and aarti happen before the day's trekkers have finished climbing from Gaurikund — the quietest hour Kedarnath offers, and the whole reason for the overnight. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, without the queue. After breakfast, descend the 19 km to Gaurikund at your own pace, take the jeep to Sonprayag where our driver is waiting, and return to Guptkashi.

Drive to Badrinath, bathe in the Tapt Kund hot spring and take darshan of Badrivishal. Continue to Mana, the last village before the Tibet border, with Vyas Gufa, Bhim Pul, Charan Paduka and the source of the Saraswati. On the return, stop at Narsingh Temple in Joshimath and the confluences at Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag and Karnprayag.

Before you fly

Char Dham registration

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim visiting all four dhams, regardless of age. It is issued as a QR-coded pass, checked at points including Rishikesh, Sonprayag and Joshimath, and you must carry a printout along with your Aadhaar or other government photo ID.

It is free through the Uttarakhand government's official channels — the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal, the mobile app, or the state WhatsApp service. Be wary of any website or agent charging a fee for basic registration.

For guests booking with us, we complete the registration for you. We need clear scans of each traveller's Aadhaar and a photograph, and we handle the rest before you fly.

Season dates change every year — the portals open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April and close around Bhai Dooj in November. Call 7351707071 for this season's confirmed dates.

The shrines open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April and close around Bhai Dooj in early November. Exact dates are announced each year by the temple committees. Within that window the months are not equal.

Before day one

How to prepare before you travel

Start walking now

Daily walking on an incline for six to eight weeks before departure. If you can comfortably cover 8–10 km in one stretch at home, Kedarnath becomes a long day rather than an ordeal.

Respect the altitude

You sleep at 3,583 metres on night six, which is a serious gain even for people used to the northern hills. Drink water constantly, avoid alcohol, eat light, and tell your driver at once if you feel headache, nausea or breathlessness. Our ten-day pacing exists for exactly this reason.

Talk to your doctor

Essential if you have blood pressure, heart, respiratory or diabetic conditions. Carry your medication with a written prescription — pharmacies on the route are basic.

What to pack

Kedarnath at night is close to freezing even in June, and you will be sleeping up there. You need a fleece and a windproof jacket, plus a poncho, shoes with grip, a walking stick, cap, torch, power bank and cash — ATMs are scarce beyond Uttarkashi. Buy the warm layers before you arrive rather than at the roadside near the temples, where they cost more and are thinner.

Expect patchy network

Signal is unreliable through the valleys and at Kedarnath. BSNL has the widest coverage on this route, with Jio second. Tell your family in advance that you may be out of contact for stretches. Our office number stays reachable for them.

Inside the temples

Recording devices are restricted inside the main premises at several dhams. Follow the instructions of temple staff, and keep your baggage light — you carry your own bag on ten different nights.

Char Dham Yatra questions, answered

How many days does the Char Dham Yatra take?

Nine nights and ten days from Dehradun back to Dehradun, which is what this package covers and about the shortest sensible road itinerary that includes a night at Kedarnath. If you are flying in from another city, our city packages run twleve days door to door, adding an arrival night in Dehradun and a closing night in Haridwar. A helicopter yatra covers all four shrines in five to six days.

What does the package cost?

From ₹30,000 per person. The final figure depends on your dates, group size, hotel category, vehicle type, room configuration and any optional helicopter or palki services. May and June cost more than September. Send your dates and headcount for one all-inclusive number.

Why do you stay overnight at Kedarnath?

Because the trek from Gaurikund is around 19 km each way. Doing both directions in one day means eight to ten hours up, a rushed darshan and a descent on exhausted legs, often finishing in the dark. Staying overnight gives you the morning aarti before the next day's climbers arrive, and a descent taken fresh. Accommodation up there is basic — huts or tented lodging, limited heating and hot water — but for most pilgrims, especially those over fifty, it is what makes Kedarnath achievable.

How difficult is the Kedarnath trek?

Demanding but not technical. Around 19 km each way on a made path, gaining more than 2,000 metres. Ponies, palkis, doli and pithoo services are available at Gaurikund at your own cost, and helicopter tickets from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi can be arranged on request. Yamunotri is the other trekking day, 6 km each way, and much easier.

Can senior citizens complete the Char Dham Yatra?

Yes, and a large share of our guests are over 60. Seniors typically take a pony or palki at Yamunotri and a helicopter or palki at Kedarnath, and the overnight stay at the temple removes the hardest part of the day. We do ask that anyone with a heart, lung, blood pressure or diabetic condition gets a doctor's clearance before booking, and we would rather tell you honestly if a shorter itinerary suits you better.

When is the best time to go?

The season runs from late April to early November, opening around Akshaya Tritiya and closing around Bhai Dooj. May–June and September–October are the best windows — clear weather, open roads and comfortable temperatures. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain, landslides and road closures across Garhwal, and we generally advise against travelling then.

Is registration mandatory, and will you do it?

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim at all four dhams, regardless of age, and is checked at points including Rishikesh, Sonprayag and Joshimath. It is included in this package — we complete it for every traveller in your group before departure. We need each person's Aadhaar and a photograph. Registration itself is free through the Uttarakhand government's official channels; be wary of anyone charging a fee for it.

Is helicopter service included?

No. Helicopter tickets are an optional extra and are quoted separately, because they are weather-dependent and priced by the operator. We can arrange Kedarnath tickets from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, and we also run a complete Char Dham helicopter yatra covering all four shrines in five to six days. Seats sell out early.

Is this a private tour or a group departure?

Private. Your family or group travels in its own vehicle on its own schedule. We do not pool travellers or run fixed coach departures.

What vehicles do you use?

Sedan, SUV, Innova Crysta, Tempo Traveller or mini coach, matched to your group size. Air conditioning is switched off through the hill sections, which is standard and necessary on these roads.

Can I start from Haridwar or Rishikesh instead of Dehradun?

Yes, on request, at either end of the trip. Many guests arrive by train at Haridwar and prefer to begin there. Tell us at the enquiry stage so we can plan the first and last days around your train.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes. We can add rest days, upgrade hotels, extend into Auli or Rishikesh, or build a Do Dham or Ek Dham version covering fewer shrines. Tell us what you want and we will price it.

What hotels do you use?

Deluxe rooms in hotels and resorts along the route — Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, Joshimath and Rudraprayag — plus basic huts or tented lodging at Kedarnath, where nothing better exists. Premium upgrades are available on request.

Are meals vegetarian?

Entirely. Daily breakfast and dinner are pure vegetarian, and non-vegetarian food and alcohol are neither available nor appropriate on the yatra route. Lunches are not included, since stopping points vary with the day's driving.

Is oxygen or medical help available on the route?

Medical posts and oxygen support are available at several points along the circuit, including near Kedarnath. Carry your own regular medication with a written prescription — pharmacies on the route are basic and will not stock what you take at home.

Which mobile network works best?

BSNL has the widest coverage on this route, with Jio second. Expect stretches with no signal at all through the valleys and at Kedarnath, and tell your family in advance that you may be out of contact for periods.

How far in advance should I book?

Thirty to sixty days ahead during the season. Hotels near Kedarnath and helicopter seats are the first things to run out, and registration is easier to complete without a rush.

What if a road is blocked or the weather turns?

It happens on this route, and our answer is honesty rather than promises. Our Dehradun office tracks conditions daily and re-sequences the itinerary as needed. Costs arising from landslides, closures or other natural causes are not covered in the package price, but you will never be left to sort it out yourself.
